Batian Peak Story

Batian Peak was founded by Kamau with inspiration from his family. Batian Peak traces its humble beginnings to Kairi village, a small rural coffee and tea growing district in central Kenya. Kamau's family has been growing coffee and tea for decades.

The Batian Peak family

Samuel, Kamau's father and the founding father of Batian Peak, has been farming coffee for more than 50 years. He spent over 30 years working at the Kenya Coffee Research Foundation, one of the best known coffee research institutes in the world. He is the inspiration of Batian Peak.

"My father is obssessed with coffee. We grew up knowing that coffee was a big part of our lives because he spent a lot of time at the coffee farm. I recall he used to get in trouble with my mum because of carrrying coffee bags in the family car - he still does.", says Kamau

Kamau's maternal grandfather, who is over 80 years old, farmed tea for over 6 decades. Kamau has fond memories of spending time with his grandfather in the tea farms. Kamau's aunt, Alice, spent over 10 years working as a quality control specialist and liqourer at the Kenya Coffee Research Foundation. She now spends time tasting and ensuring the quality of Batian Peak coffee.

Founding Batian Peak

Kamau credits his parents for instilling in him a love for God and for people. Kamau believes that everyone has a God given purpose deeply rooted in enriching other people’s lives. The journey to find his purpose was as unusual and unpredictable as it is for most people.

Entrace to a tea factory

He moved to the U.S. in 1994 and held two jobs while pursuing his undergraduate studies. After graduating in 1998, he quickly found his passion in business and pursued an MBA. While in graduate school, Kamau traced his true passion and purpose back to his home village and his family’s tradition; coffee, tea, and working with people. The idea to found Batian Peak was crystallized when Samuel visited several coffee shops in the U.S. and challenged Kamau to start roasting coffee from Batian Peak farms - he believed without a doubt the coffee could be better.

A Tea Farm in Kairi Village

Though humble and soft spoken, Kamau’s passion is unmistakable when he talks about Batian Peak.

“In Batian Peak, we envision a one-stop destination store for customers looking to enjoy exceptional coffee and tea in the comfort of their own homes. We hope they experience our passion for coffee and tea that spuns many family generations. We strive to impact our customers in a small way and they in turn enable us to impact the lives of people in our village where it all began”
